Appeal To Emotion

SummaryAn appeal to emotion is a rhetorical tactic where an author identifies what he or she believes is a universal concern among a targeted audience, and exploits it in order to persuade the reader.

Example

In this article that discusses how certain social networking sites are being banned across the country, Rep. Michael Fitzpatrick appeals to emotion by using children as the reason why the bans are necessary.

"The social networking sites have become, in a sense, a happy hunting ground for child predators," US House Representative Michael Fitzpatrick is reported to have said.

Because most American citizens share a common concern for child safety, positing that web sites like Myspace.com and Facebook.com are potential dangers to children will connect with many people on an emotional level.
