Some uses of public writing include:

Keeping in touch with friends and family, relieving stress, advertising, meeting new people, networking and politics.

Keeping In Touch

Social networking sites like MySpace allow people to keep in touch with friends and family. You are to easily able keep in contact through messages and comments on MySpace. College and high school students use Facebook (a college social network) to stay in touch with peers at other schools and to find old friends. Facebook also facillitates messaging, alerts, and even event invitations so you can easily keep in contact. Blogging allows friends to keep each other up to date on their lives, especially online friends or friends they do not see as often. Blogging is where you can communicate to a group of people and you can readily access a number of your buddies.

Relieving Stress

Public writing has become a new forum for people to be able to let our their stress in a non-confrontational way. They are able to say what they want when they want without having to deal with others reactions. Users can blog about their stressful day at work or school. Bloggers could also write about situations that they can't control and feel they need to vent about. Blogging is the new way of journal writing. Instead of writing in a diary about things that bother you, you can do it on the net. This way, it is accessed easily and anywhere. But public writing can also be used in different ways to relieve stress. You could go on and talk to friends through networking sites and tell them about your problems. Or you could go to forums and talk about other things to get your mind off what is stressing you at the moment.

Advertising

Advertising is becoming a big thing in public writing. Through MySpace and Facebook, many celebrities, music artists, and charities are broadcasting their upcoming events (albums, tour dates, charity events). Advertising on these sites is a quick and easy way to make people aware of these events and people are more likely to participate and spread the word. Celebrities use advertising on these sites to keep their fans updated on their lives and many gain more fame through doing this. Myspace, Facebook, and other public writing sites are free ways for bands and celebrities to get themselves out there and build a fanbase. One person who made it big on Myspace is Tila Nguyen. Before using myspace no one knew about her clothing line or aspirations to be a singer. Artists and Celebrities are able to advertise for themselves, brands they represent, or even new and upcoming friends.

Meeting People

For people that have a hard time meeting people face to face, public writing online may be an easier way for them to meet new people. Once they feel comfortable with that person online, they may be willing to meet and hang out with this person (or people) outside of the internet. On Facebook, students can find people that are in their same classes, which makes it easier to form study groups, and even develop friendships. Public writing also has forums open to singles where they can meet other singles, i.e. eHarmony or Match.com. Also there are chat rooms and sites specifically designed for people to meet others online. This makes it easier for users to find people in their area with similar interests or just people that they would want to build relationships with. Not just intimate relations but also for just being friends.

Networking

Networking is defined as a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest. Public writing is a new wave of ways for people to be able to connect with one another. It allows to you get in touch with many people simultaneously. You can use forums and sites such as Myspace to find people or topics of the same interest. You can put up a site about yourself and profession so others can find you. These new sites such as myspace or even job sites such as Monster.com allow people to share information with others who want that information.

Entertainment

Public writing is just not a way for people to communicate, but a way to entertain themselves as well. With sites such as YouTube, VEOH and 4chan, it is possible for people to entertain one another while still being able to share ideas and opinions. YouTube is a video database where millions of videos are uploaded everyday that people have found or made in the effort to share. 4chan on the other hand is one of the largest forums on the internet. The number of stories, images and videos posted on this forum truly make it quite entertaining when boredom settles in. Just to give you an idea of it's sheer popularity, one board on this forum known as Random(/b/) has an average of more than 66,600 posts per day.

Blogging

Blogging is the most basic form of public writing and is the root of all of these uses. Before blogs became main stream they were mainly used as online diaries or internet forums. The earliest of these were manually updated websites, but it was not long before blog software was created such as LiveJournal in order to allow a larger and less technical population to blog. Eventually new sites were created simply for the use of blogging and to create new communities. Sites such as DailyKos, an American political blog, now can be found all over the internet where people can communicate and share ideas through the use blogs.

Politics & Campaigning

Recently, politicians have started to use public writing as a way to benefit their campaign. Politicians like Hilary Clinton have Facebook and Myspace accounts. Using sites online that young adults and other individuals visit and use often is a good idea considering that the internet is the new medium that is always increasing in popularity. Public writing for politicians is a good way for them to spread their campaign issues and for people to get to know them as a person. Using the internet will get more attention. Young adults will probably get more involved in politics and elections after seeing how involved politicians are in the online community and and how the politicians are trying to reach out to all ages. Public writing sites such as Myspace has opened the doors for politicians to see where they stand. Myspace has recently launched polls about the presidential candidates to see who would win the "Myspace primaries".

News

In this age things are being intergraded into the internet like never before. Job applications, college applications, even ordering pizza are examples of this trend. The presence of things online increase convenience, and thereby creating a market for things through the internet. The news media have exclusive sites for their respective stations and recaps of stories that have been seen on their channel. News’ integration into the internet is not a position held by the mainstream media or those who are printed or viewed. There are independent news blogs that are affiliated with any news corporation and bring news to a specified crowd from a particular point of view. Some are for entertainment purposes only. These are convenient for those who are fed up with any biases in the mainstream media who are obligated with factors such as a demographic and ratings.
